The punctum is the small hole on the upper and lower eyelids that drains tears from the eye to the nasolacrimal duct (tear duct) and then into the nose. In patients with “dry eyes,” we want their natural tears to remain on the eye as long as possible. We can place a silicone plug into the punctum that will temporarily plug up this tear drainage system. This is an excellent option for dry eye patients that have a difficult time consistently using numerous drops or the cost of these drops became burdensome.
