Dr. J. Ryan Turner is a native Alabamian who grew up in a small rural town and was the son of two extremely hard-working parents. He was the valedictorian of his high school class and attended the University o f Alabama. He received his B.S. in Chemistry where he graduated summa cum laude. Dr. Turner became the first person in his family to graduate college. He then attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham where he was class president (2003-2004) and graduated in the top 25%.

He chose to stay at UAB for his ophthalmology residency for the unsurpassed clinical and surgical volume. While Dr. Turner was at UAB, the Callahan Eye Foundation Emergency Room was given the title as the country’s only Level 1 Eye Trauma Center.

Dr. Turner then pursued a Cornea, External Disease, & LASIK fellowship at the prestigious Dean McGee Eye Institute at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. During his fellowship, Dr. Turner performed numerous corneal transplants (partial and full-thickness), pterygium surgeries, complex cataract surgeries, and refractive procedures (LASIK & PRK). His surgical volume was in the top 5% for fellows in the country for the above-listed procedures. He also taught, lectured, and mentored residents and medical students throughout his fellowship.

Following his fellowship, Dr. Turner wanted to return to Alabama and had the incredibly opportunity to join Premier Medical Eye Group serving the needs for patients throughout Baldwin County and the Gulf Coast. Dr. Turner only sees patients in Baldwin County and works closely with Dr. William Murrah who has served Baldwin County for over 30 years. Dr. Turner and Dr. Murrah are the only full time fellowship-trained ophthalmologists in Baldwin County.

Dr. Turner is married to his beautiful wife, Ginger, whom he grew up with in Valley, AL. She holds a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, but now mostly holds one of their three children. They have two boys and the most recent addition is a baby girl. Dr. Turner and his family are thrilled to be in such a majestic area of the country and look forward to serving and growing in Baldwin County for many years to come.

Dr. Turner is fully board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology.
